Abstract:

The educational program in the Minor Seminary St. Yohanes Paul II emphasizes the aspects of sanctitas (holiness), scienta (knowledge), sapientia (wisdom), sanitas (health) and solidarity. In achieving all these aspects, correctio fraterna becomes one of the typical seminary education programs. This study aims to determine how the activities related to correctio fraterna in Middle Seminary of St. Yohanes Paulus II Labuan Bajo, can support seminarian character education. The research method is descriptive qualitative, with a single case study approach. The techniques used in collecting data are interviews, observation and document study. The results showed that correctio fraterna became a mandatory activity in the educational program in the St. Yohanes Paul II Middle Seminary. This activity is carried out in a small group of 5-6 people. Each member in the group provides correction (criticism) with one another, relating to several aspects of coaching in the seminary, such as spirituality, intellectual, health, discipline, work and sports, social relations, and service. The character values of students that can be built from this activity are honesty, responsibility, humility, openness, and responsibility. This activity is also a supporting factor for the formator in measuring student success. This study concludes that correctio fraterna can support the formation of seminarian characters, in accordance with the spirit of the seminary curriculum and the 2013 Curriculum.

Abstract:

Purported to integrate theory and practice, field seminars are a neglected area of pedagogical analysis in social work education. Most BSW programs contain seminar components although they are not required by accreditation standards. The authors conducted this research to examine the prevalence, purposes, and practices of BSW field integration seminars. Data were gathered from course descriptions published on the Web sites of undergraduate programs accredited by the Council on Social Work Education and a nationwide survey of BSW field directors. Findings indicate that field seminar is a ubiquitous curriculum component, with wide variation in conceptualization, format, and design; however, there are some striking commonalities in stated purposes, teaching/learning methods, and assignments. Findings also suggest seminars constitute a valued instructional modality in social work education, occupying a unique curricular space in BSW programs. Implications for curriculum development and further pedagogical examination are addressed.

Abstract:

This national study of MSW field directors provides data on field seminars and assignments. Field directors at CSWE accredited or in-candidacy MSW programs were surveyed regarding program data, presence and nature of a field seminar, required assignments, and opinion questions about CSWE requirements. Findings from the 141 completed surveys (66.2% response rate) show assignments are similar between foundation and concentration years, and also similar to assignments required in the BSW curriculum. This raises questions of curriculum redundancy and how to properly sequence field assignments. Other findings about field education and field seminar are also presented.

Abstract:

Objective: We assessed the construct validity of the LapSim laparoscopic surgical simulator in a urology residency training program. Methods: In total, 15 residents participated in the study betweenJuly 2007 and July 2008. The subjects were tested six times at onemonth intervals on three skill tasks (lifting and grasping, cuttingand clip application) using the LapSim laparoscopic simulator. Thetesting sessions were divided into the first three sessions (seminar1), and the subsequent three sessions (seminar 2). We evaluated thefollowing parameters: total time, path length, angular path length, tissue damage, maximum damage and stretch damage. The subjectswere divided into junior (PGY 1,2) and senior resident groups(PGY 3,4,5). The Wilcoxon Signed-Rank test for paired sampleswas used to compare the performances of the juniors and seniorsduring seminar 1 to their performance in seminar 2 to determinewhether there was improvement over time. The Wilcoxon Rank-Sum test for independent samples was used to compare the performance of the juniors to that of the seniors for seminar 1, seminar 2 and the combination of both seminars to determine whether the more experienced senior residents performed better than the lessexperienced juniors. Results: No significant performance improvement between testingsessions could be demonstrated. Similarly, there was no significantdifference in performance between junior and senior residents. Conclusions: Construct validity could not be demonstrated for thetotal time, path length, angular path length and tissue handlingparameters of the LapSim laparoscopic surgical simulator whenexamined within the context of a urology residency program.

Abstract:

Abstract A recent Alzheimer’s Association report noted that by year 2050, the number of Americans diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD) will triple to over 15 million. The report referred to primary care as the front line for meeting this demand, yet the nation faces a severe shortage of ADRD trained, primary care professionals (PCPs). Louisiana Geriatric Workforce Enhancement Program (LA-GWEP) addresses this demand. The purpose of this study was to examine preliminary data respective to LA-GWEP effectiveness with interdisciplinary education and training seminars, primarily aimed at medical, nursing, and social work PCPs. Three seminars were conducted in south Louisiana: Seminars 1 and 2 addressed effective communication, verbal and nonverbal, among persons with ADRD and caregivers; Seminar 3 offered basic overview of dementia symptomology, stages, and behaviors. Pre- and post-training session data were collected on-site. Participants completed questionnaires that included a 10-item knowledge assessment and 20-item Dementia Attitudes Scale (DAS). These measures contained Likert response formats; higher scores indicating greater levels of ADRD knowledge, in patient and caregiver contexts. Paired sample t-tests were conducted to observe any significant pre-to-post improvement, Cohen’s d for effect size. Seminar 1 revealed no significant pre-to-post difference: t = -1.019, p = 0.320. Adjusting content from audience feedback, Seminar 2 revealed significant pre-to-post difference: t = -7.516, p < .001, Cohen’s d = 1.2. Seminar 3 yielded significant improvement on DAS scores: t = -2.96, p < .01, Cohen’s d = 0.34. Implications for seminars in future years of LA-GWEP are discussed.

Abstract:

Objectives. To demonstrate the use of evaluation data in determining the effectiveness of a series of community-based educational seminars designed to educate substance abuse treatment counselors on the latest science regarding the effects of alcohol abuse on diseases of the liver and pancreas; in the process, to highlight the use of difference scores versus lagged regression as alternative approaches to conducting such evaluations. Methods. Data were collected from 338 seminar participants during 4 half-day seminars in 2007, 2009, 2010, and 2014. Pre- and post-seminar data were collected immediately before and after the seminar, approximately 3 hours apart. Survey questions included demographics and a series of multiple-choice knowledge questions that were identical at pre- and posttest. Results. Analyses showed that, on average, participants improved their knowledge by 19.7 percentage points from 0.44 to 0.63, or 44.7%. Factors associated with learning using difference scores revealed that only survey wave (time) was associated with learning. In contrast, lagged regression results showed that in addition to wave, participants who reported attending the seminar because they were required to for their job learned less, whereas those attending because they wanted to learn the material learned more. Education was also significantly associated with knowledge change. Conclusions. This study illustrates that relying on difference score analyses to estimate programmatic effects and changes in knowledge for educational programs can lead to faulty conclusions whereas lagged regression is a better approach to assess program impact.

Abstract:

The objective of this research project was to evaluate the effectiveness of the M.Div. program of Alliance Bible Seminary, Hong Kong. The research was designed for evaluation based solely upon the perceptions of the participant (graduate). The research identified and described the graduates enrolled, assessed perceived career development and attainment, and measured the degree of satisfaction experienced by the graduates who have matriculated from the degree program. A questionnaire was mailed to obtain the necessary data from the graduates of the M.Div. program of Alliance Bible Seminary. The questionnaire which was used was adapted from a previously used one used in the study of graduate educational programs. It has been tested in two other previous studies and was deemed effective. In order to verify its effectiveness in the Eastern context, a pilot test was conducted before the formal research, and the adapted questionnaire was found effective. Responses to the questionnaire were coded and the SPSS system was used to analyze the data. Tables and figures were constructed showing frequencies and significant differences where they occurred. Generally, the graduates at Alliance Bible Seminary were very satisfied with their educational experiences. Both males and females indicated that they would choose the same path again, and would recommend the program to others. The graduates were having full-time employment in the field of Christian ministry, and were positively attaining their career goals. The steps leading to the degree at Alliance Bible Seminary were perceived as very helpful and useful, not just the course work and independent reading, but also extre-curricular activities such as voluntary work on campus, Student Evangelistic Band, and interaction with faculty. Some aspects of the program need improvement and consolidation, such as freshmen advising in the majors, course work in the core, quality of instruction, varieties of course offered, and access to computing resources. A special concern should be made on spiritual formation activities. Over half of the respondents (55%) were not satisfied with this. This evaluation was the first of its kind in the history of the seminary. It emphasized the importance of keeping the institution responsive to the rapidly changing conditions of the society, especially in Hong Kong and China, where the focus of Christian ministry will be in the new century. Hopefully, this research project will kindle a series of research efforts that in the end will help the seminary creating an evaluation system within the institution, so that the institution is kept sensitive to the changing environment and can improve its programs accordingly.

Abstract:

This study involved non-experimental research to identify alumni perceptions of the strengths and weaknesses of the Doctor of Ministry degree program at Dallas Theological Seminary. An international survey was conducted to collect data from 165 Doctor of Ministry degree holders from Dallas Theological Seminary; 131 usable questionnaires were returned. A response rate of 79.4 percent was achieved. The intent of the study was to ascertain (a) the extent to which D.Min. alumni perceive that the objectives and goals of Doctor of Ministry programs at Dallas Theological Seminary are being met, (b) alumni-perceived strengths of Doctor of Ministry programs at Dallas Theological Seminary, (c) alumni-perceived weaknesses of Doctor of Ministry programs at Dallas Theological Seminary, (d) compare the findings of this case study assessment with a 1987 national study of Doctor of Ministry programs, and (e) make recommendations for the improvement of D. Min programs at Dallas Theological Seminary. The pattern that emerged from the data indicates that the D.Min. alumni believe objectives and goals of the Doctor of Ministry program at Dallas Theological Seminary are being met. In the opinion of the alumni, Doctor of Ministry programs at Dallas Theological Seminary has its strengths. The overall opinion of the D.Min. faculty and curriculum are strong indicators of its strength. The D.Min. program has had a positive impact on the lives of its alumni and on their ministries. In the opinion of the alumni, Doctor of Ministry programs at Dallas Theological Seminary also has its weaknesses. A casual comparison of the findings of this case study assessment with a similar 1987 national study of Doctor of Ministry programs revealed more similarities than differences. The alumni provided a number of suggestions to be implemented into the Doctor of Ministry curriculum, structure, faculty, administration, overall image of the program, its purpose and objectives.

Abstract:

This chapter explains the competitive process of admission into industrial-organizational (I-O) master’s programs, beginning with a discussion of how to determine if an I-O psychology master’s degree is the best career path. The authors give advice on how to locate, evaluate, and analyze I-O master’s programs of interest. Special attention is given to the distinction between traditional brick-and-mortar and newer online types of programs in terms of lectures and seminars, testing, applied experiences, interaction with faculty, time commitment, and other factors. The application process for I-O master’s programs is reviewed. Finally, the authors discuss how to accept an offer from one of these programs. Following the steps suggested in this chapter should enhance students’ chances of entering a quality I-O master’s program that meets their career goals.

Abstract:

This chapter reviews the efforts of a large university located in the East Coast of the United States to support faculty technology literacy through participation in development programs featuring a mix of technology skills and instructional design seminars. The success of these programs is evaluated on a series of criteria: faculty needs and satisfaction, ability to meet faculty learning objectives, and short-term and long-term benefits in terms of new initiatives implementation. Survey protocols and instruments used to evaluate program effectiveness are included to support future implementations by other institutions. The authors intend to encourage the development of similar programs, and the understanding of current obstacles that hinder a full deployment of technology in the classroom.

Abstract:

The authors, two faculty members with experience in online and blended learning at a Midwestern United States (US) medical school graduate leadership program, recognized the need for a critical thinking, literature-based course to explore the role of gender in health care leadership models. Acknowledging that such seminars are often mixed with cultural, social, and organizational bias, the faculty members set out to create and implement a hybrid course that blended formal, non-formal, and informal learning in a collaborative group seminar using Web 2.0 tools along with traditional teaching methodology. The Community of Inquiry model formed the pedagogical foundation of the course. This chapter will describe the planning, decisions, implementation, and outcomes of the course, including technical and logistical issues. Included are discussions of the role of gender in both health care leadership and online learning to demonstrate the strengths, opportunities, and limitations of the course.

Abstract:

Thermal-hydraulic system computer codes are extensively used worldwide for analysis of nuclear facilities by utilities, regulatory bodies, nuclear power plant designers and vendors, nuclear fuel companies, research organizations, consulting companies, and technical support organizations. The computer code user represents a source of uncertainty that can influence the results of system code calculations. This influence is commonly known as the ‘user effect’ and stems from the limitations embedded in the codes as well as from the limited capability of the analysts to use the codes. Code user training and qualification is an effective means for reducing the variation of results caused by the application of the codes by different users. This paper describes a systematic approach to training code users who, upon completion of the training, should be able to perform calculations making the best possible use of the capabilities of best estimate codes. In other words, the program aims at contributing towards solving the problem of user effect. The 3D S.UN.COP (Scaling, Uncertainty and 3D COuPled code calculations) seminars have been organized as follow-up of the proposal to IAEA for the Permanent Training Course for System Code Users [1]. Five seminars have been held at University of Pisa (2003, 2004), at The Pennsylvania State University (2004), at University of Zagreb (2005) and at the School of Industrial Engineering of Barcelona (2006). It was recognized that such courses represented both a source of continuing education for current code users and a mean for current code users to enter the formal training structure of a proposed ‘permanent’ stepwise approach to user training. The 3D S.UN.COP 2006 was successfully held with the attendance of 33 participants coming from 18 countries and 28 different institutions (universities, vendors, national laboratories and regulatory bodies). More than 30 scientists (coming from 13 countries and 23 different institutions) were involved in the organization of the seminar, presenting theoretical aspects of the proposed methodologies and holding the training and the final examination. A certificate (LA Code User grade) was released to participants that successfully solved the assigned problems. A sixth seminar will be organized in 2007 at the Texas A&M University involving more than 30 scientists between lecturers and code developers. (http://dimnp.ing.unipi.it/3dsuncop/2007)

Abstract:

With the growth of economy in ASEAN countries, their desire to create high value-added jobs or high technology industries are increasing. Such drive, in addition to the clasic motivation of creating national pride and strategy for defense and security, made many of them started to have national space program. Since they are satellite users, they started the program with acquiring satellite production technology. Due to such background, the paper discusses about satellite technology acquisition programs in ASEAN countries, with focus on the program’s strategic environment and implementation. The objective of research is to establish positioning map of satellite technology aqusition program in ASEAN. The method used is decriptive analytics, in which data on the program scale and coverage, technology regulations, and institutional buildings in each countries were sumarized and compared. The study shows that all of the ASEAN countries started their satellite technology acquisition by developing remote sensing satellites. It is found that Singapore and Malaysia are the highest in current satellite technology program scale, and in the future, Vietnam’s program scale will catch up with Indonesian and Thailand’s. For Indonesia, even though it has technology mastering and space agency, but lack of investment made it unable to move beyond micro-satellite program

Abstract:

Aim/Purpose: This paper will describe the initial development of systems to evaluate research education activities of a U.S. academic Partnership to train minority students as cancer researchers and provide preliminary data from monitoring Partnership activities during the first six months. Background: There is increased focus on multidisciplinary/transdisciplinary research training programs. However, few training programs have included detailed evaluations to assess their outcomes and effectiveness. Methods: The Temple University/Fox Chase Cancer Center and Hunter College Regional Comprehensive Cancer Health Disparity Partnership (TUFCCC/HC Cancer Partnership, or the Partnership) is a recently-initiated center focused on training individuals from under-represented minorities (URMs) as cancer researchers. Evaluation of the training activities involves detailed specification of goals for each of the Partnership’s Cores; objectives for addressing each goal; measures and indicators to determine progress towards each objective; and data sources to provide information for the measures/indicators. Contribution: This paper will provide important information for evaluation of training programs focused on students from URM populations and development of transdisciplinary research education programs. Findings: Goals, objectives, measures, and data sources for evaluation of the Partnership’s Research Education Core (REC) were developed jointly by personnel from the REC and the Planning Evaluation Core (PEC) in an iterative process. These measures capture the training activities led by the REC (e.g., number of seminars and workshops), scientific output by trainees (e.g., papers and grants), and ability of the program to meet trainees’ goals and expectations. Recommendations for Practitioners and Researchers: Evaluation plans for transdisciplinary training programs need to be developed prior to program initiation. Evaluation measures should be jointly specified by training and evaluation personnel, then reviewed and revised in an iterative process. Impact on Society: This program is intended to enhance diversity among cancer researchers and increase studies to address disparities in cancer care. Future Research: The PEC will oversee the evaluation of Partnership training activities over the five year period and assist Partnership leaders in ensuring successful outcomes.

Abstract:

This paper presents the recent experience of teaching and learning “Green Engineering” in a multidisciplinary seminar. The instructors who organized the seminar included an environmental engineer and a mechanical/manufacturing engineer. The student population included both graduate and undergraduate students majoring in civil/environmental, mechanical, manufacturing and aerospace engineering as well as several biology majors. The course was organized as a semester long seminar with many guest speakers from industry, government, academia and law firms. In addition to assigned reading and literature searches/reviews, the main learning experiences were provided by two large team projects. The first multidisciplinary team project was a “game” that required the students to develop a facility to provide a variety of products that utilized materials that are toxic, hazardous and radioactive. The students were assigned various roles in the company including bidding, manufacturing, environmental and purchasing responsibilities. The teams were judged on both the financial and environmental success of their company. The second multidisciplinary major team project focused on the creation of a green product including, the design and manufacturing processes, as well as the business plan. The student interest in this project was enhanced by a competition with cash prizes that was financed and judged by WPI’s Entrepreneurship program’s faculty and staff.

Abstract:

In France, the nuclear industry has developed a substantial program for decommissioning plants and nuclear installations, and for remediating and rehabilitating industrial sites. The Commission for the Establishment of Analysis Methods (CETAMA) is a unit of the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) whose main objective is to improve the quality of analysis and measurement results in the nuclear field. Analysis is the primary tool for monitoring the spread of nuclear material. This document shows that sampling, in close relation with measurement techniques, is a factor of potential gain and risk reduction for site remediation, decommissioning, and rehabilitation projects.
