'We're Gods. Lousy little Gods who control the lifes of the people we create', lispelt Eastwood met een nerveuze, staccato intonatie. In White hunter, black heart speelt Eastwood de legendarische regisseur John Huston (in de film John Wilson) tijdens diens roerige productieperiode voor The African Queen (1951), de klassieker met Bogart en Hepburn. Huston was in die tijd een van de belangrijkste regisseurs onder het Hollywoodfirmament en zeker een van de grilligste. Zogenaamd op zoek naar geschikte locaties zeulde hij zijn entourage door de binnenlanden van Afrika terwijl hij eigenlijk alleen maar een kolossale olifant wilde schieten. Scenarist Peter Viertel (gespeeld door Jeff Fahey) was erbij en schreef een - achteraf door Huston gefiatteerde - roman over de opnameperikelen. Het oogt aanvankelijk wat onwennig om levende legende Eastwood in de huid te zien van een dode legende, maar Eastwood pareert met een spervuur van gedreven teksten, statige lichaamstaal en - jawel - melancholie. Misschien wilde Clint alleen maar duidelijk maken dat Hollywood zo slecht nog niet was: 'het is gewoon een plek waar een product wordt gemaakt. Het is een industriestad, zoals Detroit, Birmingham of Schaffhausen.' (VM/VPRO Gids)

Hard-living, macho movie director John Wilson (Clint Eastwood) arrives in 1950s Zimbabwe to prepare for his next film. Accompanied by screenwriter Pete Verrill (Jeff Fahey), Wilson becomes far more interested in shooting an elephant than getting ready for the shoot. Determined, Wilson moves production to a village where a native hunter helps him in his quest.
